Hello, I am Abhranil Das. I was born in Kolkata and went to South Point School. I finished an integrated MS in Physics from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata (IISER-K) in 2013, and I'm currently pursuing a PhD in Physics at the University of Texas at Austin. Here's my CV.
I started writing a book on the mathematics of vision in school which I finished in college. It has been published by Lambert Academic Publishers, Germany. You can find it on almost all popular online bookstores. The thumbnail takes you to Amazon.com.
For 2½ months in the summer of 2011 I worked (on this) at the University of Hamburg, Germany with funding from the DAAD. Now I have been appointed a Young Ambassador for the promotion of German studies and scholarships in India (here's my profile). You can mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
My passions other than Physics include drumming, writing, photography, a bit of sketching, and conservation. I rather like programming, web-designing (I designed the website for Inquivesta 2011, our college science festival), and graphic designing. My favourite outdoor activities include biking, swimming and football.

I started teaching myself to play the drums from the start of undergraduate (that's about 2008), and played in progressive rock band Simple Black at IISER Kolkata, and currently play in Blues band Maxwell's Dæmons at grad school in UT Austin. Here's some of our performances from India:
Recently I started teaching myself the keyboard a bit. I don't know anything about the keyboard or piano (can't even tell which key is what note), but there's this little score called Truman Sleeps from the beautiful 1998 movie The Truman Show that I liked so much I decided I'd have to learn to play it. Here's an adaptation that I picked up from YouTube:
My favourite music is mostly electronic and rock. My current favourite rock bands are Coldplay, Muse, Radiohead, Cage the Elephant, Linkin Park, Death Cab for Cutie and The XX. In instrumental and electronic music my favourites are Hybrid, Phutureprimitive, God is an Astronaut, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Solar Fields, Owl City, Enigma, Daft Punk, The Prodigy, Ulrich Schnauss, and Bassnectar.
Here's an electronic mix I created from the best electronic music I've heard so far:
